The Zillertal High Road

A ride on the Zillertal High Road is an unforgettable experience and offers everything your heart desires!

The Zillertal High Road is one of the most beautiful alpine roads in Austria and offers every visitor a wonderful ride to an altitude of 2,020 m by car, by coach (up to 10,5 m long), by public bus to Melchboden, even by bicycle.

Brief history of the Zillertal High Road

Our high alpine roads were built at the beginning of the 1960’s and were originally intended to help farmers manage their alpine pastures and improve access for building river barriers to prevent the frequent flooding that occurred in this area.
Word soon spread about the beautiful panoramic views which could be enjoyed from the road over the Zillertal Alps. With this in mind the road, a simple dirt track as it was in those days,  was opened to the general public in the late 1960`s. Since the opening of the Hirschbichlalm Guest House in 1973, music has also played an important role in attracting guests to the area.
What originally started with the Zellberg Duo with Doris has since grown and now includes the Zillertaler Haderlumpen and the Zellberg Buam. A wonderful combination of great folk music and stunning mountain scenery.

In 1978 a road was built linking Zell via Zellberg to the Höhenstraße. The high costs of building and maintaining the 50km panoramic road necessitated the introduction of a toll fee for road users.
